Chuck Levy Plays That's My Rabbit, My Dog Caught It, on Clawhammer Banjo 4.20.13
Here is a sprightly tune in the key of C (Banjo tuned "Double C", gCGCD) from the Walter Family. I love this tune for its frantic melody, odd blend of instruments, and its "arrangement," which evokes for me a Bugs Bunny/Merry Melodies kind of chase with the hounds close behind.
I am playing a Gold Tone BC 350+ banjo (this is the fancy Bob Carlin model).
The tune comes from the Walter Family as recorded on March 29, 1933, in Richmond, Indiana. It was originally released on Champion 16653, and reissued on the three different compilation recordings,: "That's My Rabbit, My Dog Caught It: Traditional Southern Instrumental Styles", New World NW 226; "Kentucky Mountain Music, Box Set of 7 CDs and...

Love this song. I don't know why is not performed more often
🇬🇼🇬🇼🇬🇼✨🙌🏿✨🙌🏿 precursor to the guitar from west Africa 🙌🏿✨🇬🇼🙌🏿✨🇬🇼 Jola
Or maybe the banjo!
American music is Black music. Bluegrass, Blues, Folk, Rock… all of it.
African influences are rich, full, and deep in the musics of the Americas
I like Senegal 🇸🇳 🇸🇳🇸🇳🇸🇳🇸🇳🥰🥰🥰
Me too!

thats beautiful. we can all agree, one banjo, brings out our whole family history, weather from Africa, to America.. we all enjoy a banjo our grandfathers played.
Nicely said!
Namaste Om
likewise to you!
Ive never heard anyone that can play Redwing as pretty as Alan does ,but Banjo Ben Clark has a great version also.
Yup a=Alan is a peach
Apologies if this has already been answered, but can anyone see how many strings are there on that instrument?
Steve Martin approved this.
I would hope so.
Why do people ALWAYS make claims of black, or white or whatever.......who does this? How about this. Human beings from all different areas of the world have made an impact and contribution to our collective experiences. Im sure Mr. Jatta would rather share his culture with others rather than claim THIS IS MINE!
I hate how whitewashed country music has been. I wish i learned the history of the music we started when i was younger.
Sounds a lot like old-time Appalachian folk music
The through line straight to old-time banjo is remarkable!
The cello banjo was a nice addition to one of my favorite songs by Jeni & Billy!
Thanks so much!!!
The instrument that started country music in the USA
Ground zero for American popular music!
this should have 1M likes
You made my day!!!
@@ChuckLevy That would make us even 🙂
lol blacks created country music and the bangjo is kinda like blacks rubbing sticks together to make fire and saying they invented the lighter. or like blacks puttin their ear into a conk shell an sayin they invented the radio or like blacks drawing with sticks in the sand an sayin they created art. ITS PATHETIC.
thats look like /GNAWA/ in morocco
Good eye! The Gnawan gimbri, like the akonting (ekonting) is played in a downstroke style. Gnawan origins are in West Africa.
This was great! Awesome version
I like it too
I love the history of banjo and hope more people become aware of it.
What i love about this tune, it's pretty much anything goes
Lovely ❤
Amen
I read somewhere bluegrass has roots with irish immigrants? I love to think some Irish lad picked up an Akonting and just started singing the songs of home and across the world, there was a soulful young man doing the same, thousands of miles away.
I have responded before, hope you are still playing...Jeff
The modern banjo, is an instrument, that was created in the USA (not Africa). It was influenced, by both African and European instruments.
No you asshole. The modern banjo was an instrument created in the caribbeans by slaves, clearly deriving from this instrument. This is 2024. It doesn't take much to educate yourself. But you decided to show everybody how stupid and ignorant you are.
What picking style are you using in these videos?
I am using the downstroke technique commonly known as clawhammer.
I really enjoy your youtubes and also I may be getting the OT-800 here shortly@@ChuckLevy
Thanks so much for your kind remarks. Let me know how it goes! @@pointdoc1
The Akonting is the Banjo's Great Granddaddy because of it's Banjo like appearance and Folksy sound.
The downstroke style of akonting playing is very similar to minstrel and clawhammer banjo playing.
It's the Great Grand Daddy of the Banjo
Yup! And not the only one.
Are you from Florida? I seen you had some videos of Lloyd Baldwin. Real excellent banjo picking.
Thanks! I am from Florida, and I have posted some videos of Lloyd. Are you nearby?
@@ChuckLevy I’m in St. Petersburg. I’m usually out in Dade city/San Antonio playing with the dogs. I don’t frequent that place, but I been trying to jam more with them. I seen Lloyd play in San Ann once
@@Orourkebanjo Excellent! Pleased to make your acquaintance!

yes yes
Thank you sir
Great song title and great song
AGREED!
One of the most beautiful banjo tunes I have ever heared. Just ordered his new CD from County Sales called "Excelsior".
Bloody good
Yes Indeed!
Holy shit, American music is more inspired by West Africa than probably most. Makes so much sense, this shit goes deep.
The river of music that we are traveling on is wide, deep, and long with many tributaries.
Very Wesome
Awesome not wesome
The origin of Bluegrass.
The source!
where does this guy live
Indiana?
So lovely!
i'm working my way through his clawhammer book right now and it is SO informative!!
Same here!
Ken is a Great banjo player but he should refrain from making remarks Quote one battle the Scots one he doesn't really know much about Scottish history other than what the colonial masters project.
❤️
Just got an awesome Menzies Tackhead banjo. Getting my head around best pitch/tunings for it. Dan seems about the best starting point for it to me. I figured the tuning from watching him here but I WONDER IS THIS A PARTICULAR TUNING OR ONE DAN MADE UP FOR THIS TUNE? Ooops caps lock accident again!
OK I figured it. It's 'Minstrel' tuning aka etc etc. Played banjo for too many years but never used it! Crazy!
amazing
Yup!
Yes and Indeed
Jeni & Billy are darling and talented. Thanks so much for sharing this. God bless you. Please tell them that their house concert performance is blessing folks even 12 years on. ❤✝❤
